St Adolphe Students Work with Rivers West Project

Grade 3 and 4 students of Ecole St. Adolphe had a unique opportunity to assist in developing and piloting a resource for the Habitats and Communities section of the Science curriculum. Rivers West, a not-for-profit organization promoting tourism and conservation along the Red River, approached the school to assist in developing a Riverbottom Forest curriculum that would give teachers resources to study this back door habitat with ease. Students were excited and honoured to be asked to do the art work for this manual. The finished product boasts full and half page colour pictures of the students’ work.

For teachers, the finished product is a binder of lesson plans which includes a CD-rom with photographs of the flora and fauna most likely to be found by students on a field trip to the riverbottom forest, a field guide colouring book for students, and other teaching aids such as colour photos and game cards. This was an exciting project for all involved!

Riverbottom Forest Project
By Maddi Touchette

When I was in grade four we did a study of the riverbottom forest. We studied the animals, plants and riverbottom habitat. Ms Dangerfield came to our class and talked more about the above. We went on a fieldtrip to the riverbottom forest in St. Adolphe. We saw and identified many of the plants and trees we talked about. Sadly we only saw a few deer and we didn’t get to see all the animals we had studied. After the field trip we played a series of games about the riverbottom. We also did artwork that went into the guide for teachers so they can teach their students about the riverbottom forest too.
